As part of this delegation, Hunter also visited SouthSaltLake and approved construction of the first LDS Temple on May 6, 1851—a momentous event that helped solidify the colony’s status as a religious sect within America’s largest country after independence from Great Britain. The following year saw rapid growth in SouthSaltLake as more Mormons arrived seeking refuge from persecution dating back to coming days during which plural marriage—or sexual relationships between two men or women—became an official policy within Mormonism under Joseph Smith Jr.'s leadership arc (1830–1844). By 1860 there were over 1,500 residents living in what is now southcentral Utah; however, by 1870 only about 100 remained due largelyto periodic missions assignments sent out by Brigham Young successor John Taylor which emptied many homes and farms during winter months when travel was difficult or impossible
