The city was first called Provo during the early years of its establishment and it officially changed its name to South Salt Lake on January 1, 1951. On December 3, 1912, South Salt Lake became an incorporated municipality with a population of 26 citizens. On July 16, 1954, the City Council designated a park in downtownSouthSaltLake as "George H. Smith Park". In 1969-1970, two new libraries were built in downtownSouthSaltLake and they are now known as "Cyrus Minton Library" and "Linda Chavez Library". On February 22nd, 2002 Mayor Rocky Anderson announced that he would not seek reelection due to his wife having multiple sclerosis; however he remains active in local government through his role as Vice President for Community Services for Northridge Municipal Governments Independent School District (MID). Former Mayor Rocky Anderson's daughter Bonnie Anderson has also been elected to serve as mayor since her father's passing in 2002. BonnieAnderson began her term on August 15th and is currently serving until September 14th 2021
