Martinsville quickly became an important center for Union activity in central Virginia. By 1865, it had become a key shipping point for munitions supplies flowing into Northern armies fighting against Confederate forces. The town experienced significant economic decline following these events, but it has slowly recovered since then and is now an important cultural and historical center in Central Virginia.
