The first European settler in what would become Covington was John Day on May 10, 1851. The name "Covington" was given by Captain James Cook while he was searching for a land route between Puget Sound and China during his 1827–28 voyage along Asia's eastern coast. Day found a piece of land that he named "Covington" after General George Washington's estate at Mount Vernon in Virginia; however, no Native American elements were found on this site or anywhere near it when explorer John Day discovered it in 1851. After several months of exploration byDay and his men there grew into an encampment with about eighty pioneers including seven women and four children under the age of eighteen; all but one child had been born within weeks of arriving in what would be their new home. On November 12th1851Captain Edward Everett Ellsworth led a party of five hundred pioneers from Seattle overland through Oregon country downriver to present-day Covington where they erected their first log cabin which still stands today as part of Pioneer Village Park off Highway 519 just east of Interstate 5 Bridgeport Road South (Route 201). The village attracted attention from settlers living near Puget Sound who desired access to its fertile soil for growing crops and raising livestock; these early inhabitants included fur traders such as Captains Vancouver and Perry who traveledthe regionand treated local Indians as second class citizens until white settlement began expanding rapidly throughout much of northwest America during this period." In 1861 entrepreneur Arents Ames built two churches – First Presbyterian meetinghouse on shoreline opposite current day First Baptist Church –on donated acres southeast of modern day First Avenue SE just southof Interstate 5 Bridgeport Rd., now known as Pioneer Square . This pioneer community quickly became known for its agriculture products (flour, beans, bacon) that helped support rapid growth throughout most portionsof King County during this time period."
