The community is named after Captain James Covington, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as a U.S. Representative from Washington Territory. Covington is a small town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,335 at the 2010 census. Covington is located on the east side of Lake Washington and straddles the border of King and Snohomish counties. It is bordered to the north by Interstate 5, to the east by Unincorporated Puget Sound County and to the south by Shoreline Park. The first settlers in this area were Russian immigrants who came to what is now Covington in 1853. They built a log cabin on land that later became part of Kingdom Rancho de la Conchita. In 1855, James Fenton purchased 640 acres (253 hectares) of land from Pedro de la Cueva for $10 per acre. This area became known as Fenton Rancho de las Palmas or farmstead #1 after Fenton's son-in-law, David Laird Clark bought it in 1858 for $6 per acre. Clark developed what would become known as Covington into a small farming community with three schools and two churches in 1865 when he donated land for both public school purposes and also built a house as a Chapel of Rest for his employees and family members during their absences from work at home during religious services. As more people started arriving in Covington over time, new houses were constructed on either side of Union street which served as homes until 1955 when they all burned down due to arson by teenage boys living nearby using gasoline cans filled with kerosene hidden inside rocks placed near roads leading into town while parents were away at work or playing games outside their homes. In 1955, voters approved an amendment to the Washington Constitution creating King County which included Covington within its boundaries; however unlike other towns within King County (such as Bellevue), voting did not take place in adjacent Snohomish County until 1959 when that county was organized following statehood via an act of Congress. When KING-TV began operations on October 15th 1957 from studios located behind First National Bank across Union Street from old High School (now Community College), it was one of only two television stations serving rural areas throughout King County before digital TV arrived years later – making KING-TV one of only four television stations statewide that still broadcasts analog signals today!
