In 1912, King George High School was built on land that had been donated by General Agreement Land Company president George Vancouver for use as a school district high school. The name changed to Kenmore High School in 1928 after the merger of King George and Conestoga schools into Snohomish County Schools. WhenSeattle-Tacoma Metropolitan Area formed in 1984, Kenmore became one of its first jurisdictions within that new entity. In 2006, Mayor Greg Nickels announced plans for development adjacent to the high school campus that would create over 1 thousand jobs over 10 years – including 130 permanent jobs created during construction phase alone – making it one of only five communities nationwide to have such an impact on their local economy while also governing itself democratically through referendum processes
The Kenmore area was first settled by the Liscom family in 1792. The initial land grants were for a small, rural village called "Kenmore." In 1881, the town of Kenmore merged with the neighboring village of Wellesley to form what is now known as Seattle. The name "Kenmore" began to be used primarily for the community within its boundaries and not the larger city.
