Clarksburg, West Virginia is a city in Monongalia County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 14,871 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Monongalia County and home to the Clarksburg Museum and Archives. The first settlement in Clarksburg was made on December 15, 1811 by Captain David Denton and Major John Patterson for protection from Indian aggression. The town site was chosen because of its strategic location between Wheeling and Fayetteville on the Potomac River. On November 10, 1814, Clarksburg became part of Frederick County after it was designated as part of a Union district west of the Alleghenies. In 1881, General Ulysses S. Grant moved his headquarters from Wheeling to Clarksburg following his victorious campaign against Joseph Custer's army at Battle of Little Big Horn in Wyoming Territory. He had been ordered by President James K. Polk to march westward to cut off Custer's supply lines before he reached Montana Territory under Abraham Lincoln. When Grant arrived in Clarksburg, he met with local officials to discuss plans for the future development of the community. In 1902–1903 Colonel John Maney built Fort Myer on land purchased from Chief Washakie near present-day Arlington Heights in western Monongalia County as part of an effort to secure access to eastern Kentucky through which goods could be shipped into Baltimore City via Point Lookout Gap Bridge

Clarksburg was founded by William Clarks in 1770. The town was named after General James Clark, who helped lead the British forces during the American Revolution. Clarksburg grew quickly and became a major manufacturing center in West Virginia. In the 1920s, Clarksburg was home to one of the first schools in West Virginia.
