Some of the earliest reports of Huntington are from the year 1525. The town was first mentioned in a deed by John White and James Covington. According to one source, “Huntington is taken from the Indian word Quincunx meaning two eyes” because it was a post station on the Mill Run road that connected Fort Monmouth with Huntington. The development of transportation made hunting and fishing more efficient, so more people moved to this area to live and work in the early days of Huntington.

Huntington is the county seat of Logan County and home to the Huntington-Weber Regional Airport. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Huntington were French Canadians who arrived in 1775 and founded a small trading post on the Kanawha River. In 1819, Captain John Cranch established a fort on an island in the Monongahela River near present day Point Pleasant. This fort served as a base of operations for fur traders traveling upriver to trade with Native Americans. The British occupied this fort during the American Revolutionary War (1775-83). In 1824, General James Ketchum built Fort Randolph on land he had purchased from Chief Joseph Brougham ofthe Shawnee Nation. This strategic location along the Kanawha River made it an excellent place to store goods and provide defense against northern Indian attacks. In 1830, General Averill Harney moved his headquarters from Fort Randolph to Fort Monroe on Monticello Hill in downtown Huntington after learning that President Andrew Jackson was planning to move northward towards Pittsburgh. On November 3, 1835, Governor John Dennison issued a proclamation announcing that Huntington would be incorporated as a town under Article VII of the Kentucky Constitution which took effect February 1st of that year. On July 16th of 1836, Drury Hennon donated 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of present day Saugerties Creek Road to make room for what would become Huntington Park. The original town boundaries were: Northwest Cornerline Streets NW and SW; Northeast Cornerline Streets NE and NE; Southwestern cornerline Streets SSW and SSW; Southwest cornerline Streets WSW and WSW; East Cornerline Streets EC and EC

In 1824, Huntington became the capital of Mingo County. Huntington has experienced much growth over the years and has become one of the most important communities in Mingo County. The community features a variety of businesses including restaurants, banks and retailers. There are also several colleges and universities located in or near Huntington which provide opportunities for residents to pursue their education outside of their home town.

The area that is now Huntington was annexed by West Virginia in 1825 and became part of the state of West Virginia. In 1870, Huntington became one of the original U.S. settlements in what is now southernWest Virginia after being included within Kentucky as part of the Kansas-Nebraska Act.
