Huntington is a town in Huntington County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat and largest city of Huntington County. The first post office was established in 1817. The name "Huntington" originates from the Shawnee word hinawa meaning to trade goods with other tribes. The town was founded on a large tract of land that still exists today as part of Huntington Township. The original settlers were mostly farmers and their families who traveled overland for trade with Native Americans and other settlers in what is now Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. By 1800, these early pioneers had built a small log cabin known as Old Huntingtown which served as the first courthouse in what is now Huntington County. In 1819, General George Rogers Clark passed through this area on his way to Fort Donelson in Tennessee and recommended that the U.S. Military build a military post here to protect Western traders against Indian attacks. This suggestion was followed up by President James Ketchum and General Winfield Scott who both recommended construction of a fortification called Fort Donelson which would eventually become known as Charleston Heights after the city situated nearby (Charleston later became West Virginia's capital). In 1830, John Cranch moved from near Harper’s Ferry into what is now Huntington Township to purchase 640 acres (250 hectares) of land east of present-day downtown for $2 per acre ($40/$/acre). He named his new community after himself – Cranchstown – because he had purchased this land from Chief Joseph Potosi (a Shawnee leader) just before peace negotiations between America and Native groups at Talcoe led by President Andrew Johnson resulted in signing Treaty No 4 on July 6, 1835 ending the Indian Wars plaguing America during Jackson’s Presidency In 1854 when WV COLONIAL MILITARY TOWNSHIP [now HUNTINGTON] Was created From Parts Of: HUNTINGTON COUNTY - And Critterstown On Top Of That - With All New Townslot Designations - So Incorporating: Cranchstown - Denisonville - Fayetteville - Greenwood Village - Hubbardston [now White Sands] The main industry until recently has been agriculture but there are also some light manufacturing operations such as breweries and clothing companies located within or around downtown since it has been an important center for commerce throughout its history
