In 1814 James Ketchum founded Ketchum Station on the Ohio River just upstream from present-day Parkersburg for fur traders looking for a way across the river without going through Kentucky or Tennessee (then part of Kentucky). As shipping traffic increased on both rivers during the early 1800s, Ketchum developed a ferry service linking his station with points near Pittsburgh and Point Breeze on Pennsylvania’s East Coast. By 1830 he had also built a larger wharf facility at present-day Canal Street which became one of West Virginia’s leading commercial centers during its early years as an independent state. Ketchum died childless in 1841 and his estate passed to his nephew John Dickey Ketchum Jr., who continued operations as Ketchum Navigation Company until 1865 when it merged with other transportation companies to form United States Steel Corporation (US Steel). The original brick building where US Steel now stands was built by JH McLeod & Son shipbuilders in 1892; it served as their local office until 1910 when they relocated to tankerville adjacent to US Steel’s current Facilities Building. It was not until 1907 that USSteel began manufacturing radio receivers here – one such receiver still survives today outside USSteel’s current Facilities Building – making this site one of America’s earliestradio production sites! In 1924 American Bridge & Construction Company established itself as America's first large bridge construction company by constructing several major spans across West Virginian waterways including Catoctin Creek Bridge and Moeller Ford Bridge over Roanoke River - these crossings remain some of America's most well known landmarks today! Electricity arrived in Parkersburg late in 1912 when work began on Union Pacific Railroad's Main Line Extension from Wheeling southward across Potomac River valley into West Virginia concurrent withwestern railroad construction nearby! Union Carbide also made initial industrial investments here before moving its primary operations downstream into Raleigh NC starting up Greenback Gasworks there later that year!
