In the early 1800s, Eau Claire was a thriving agricultural town in Wisconsin. The town’s growth was due to its location on the Mississippi River and its access to firearms. In 1846, Congress passed the National Firearms Act, which made it illegal for civilians to possess any type of firearm without a license. This law caused a lot of violence in Eau Claire, as people argued over who would be able to get their hands on these new arms. Eventually, the town council passed an ordinance that allowed citizens to possess handguns only if they were registered with the sheriff’s department and wore a transmitter tag around their neck. This ordinance helped keep Eau Claire safe from crime while also allowing residents to own firearms that they could use for self-defense. Despite this safety measure, someEauClaire residents still argue that owning firearms is essential for society as a whole. Eau Claire, Wisconsin is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Calumet County. The population was 1,512 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first European settlement in what is now Eau Claire was by French colonists in 1763. The town derived its name from an early settler, Eufaula Chauncey, who named it for Étienne-Jacques Cartier, Sieur de la Salle's chief lieutenant on his trip to Canada in 1669–70. Eau Claire was incorporated as a village on December 12, 1854, and became a city on January 15, 1907. City officials adopted a new charter that provided for automatic annexation of adjacent villages if their populations reached 20%, 50%, or 100% within two years of each other; this happened in 1912 and 1914 respectively. Wisconsin Route 41 running through downtown served as one main artery into the city until 1974 when Interstate 94 (I-94) replaced it and eliminated many direct routes into and out of the city center; consequently, most business customers now use Milwaukee Avenue or Highway 9W which runs concurrently through downtown and then turns east towards Green Bay before terminating at I-94 exit 43 south of town. The original road designation still remains as State Street between I-94 exit 43 (the old routing) and Milwaukee Avenue exit 45A (the current routing). Eau Claire has been ranked #1 among "America’s Most Liveable Cities" by Forbes magazine twice consecutively since 2002 - first in 2005 (#2), then again in 2009 (#1). In 2008/2009 both cities were also awarded “Best Place to Live” by readers of "Zillow". Eau Claire is a town in the Milwaukee metropolitan area, located on the eastern border of Wisconsin. The population was 34,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–Waukesha–West Allis–Bloomington CDP. The first European settlers in what is now Eau Claire were French fur traders who arrived in 1792, after traveling through Canada and then up the Fox River to Lake Michigan. They named their new settlement "Fonds du Lac" because they foundered on a small stream called Fond du Lac while exploring land east of present-day Eau Claire. The town was incorporated as a village in 1854, and became a city when it joined the Milwaukee metropolitan area in 1974. The current mayor is Tom Barrett. In 2007, Eau Claire became one of only two U.S towns to receive an economic stimulus package from President George W Bush worth $50 million (the other being Yonkers, New York). Today's economy largely depends on agriculture, which has been its mainstay for centuries; there are also some small manufacturing businesses and services operations located within or near the town limits. One notable local business is Hennepin County's largest employer - Target - which opened its first store in downtown Eau Claire in 1957 and continues to grow today with over 1,000 locations throughout North America. Eaux Claires National Wildlife Refuge covers much of northeastern Wisconsin along with portions of Iowa and Minnesota
Eau Claire was founded in 1854 by General James K. Polk as a small town on the north banks of the Eau Claire River. The city's present-day boundaries were set in 1907 by a local referendum. It is located about 25 miles (40 km) northwest of Milwaukee and 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Chicago.
