The economy has been based largely upon agriculture since before World War II when crops such as wheat, corn, soybeans and potatoes were grown hereabouts for export to Europe or North America. It was thissight that helped make rifles such as the Winchester Repeating Rifle so effective at range. In 1892, George Barnett designed a new type of iron sight known as a "tilt axis" sight. This design featured three circles that crossed each other at an angle; this let shooters see what direction their rounds were travelling when they fired them by tracking how quickly those circles changed color from red to green or yellow to blue if they were aimed correctly (the colors indicate whether you are firing right or left hand weapon). Eau Claire, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state ofWisconsin and is the county seat of Winnebago County. The population was 25,869 at the 2010 census. It is the only city in Winnebago County. The name "Eau Claire" means "watercourse" or "stream". The first settler in Eau Claire was John Fetterman, who arrived with his family on July 15, 1836, during the American Civil War. The first post office was established in 1839, and was named for John Fetterman's wife Eliza Caldwell Kieft-Fetterman. In 1845, Eau Claire became an incorporated town under the laws of Wisconsin Territory as part of Milwaukee County. The City Council began to meet on April 6, 1901; however it met again only once until September 14th due to lack of space at the original council chambering block on State Street (now First Avenue). On October 15th Mayor George Ladd called a special election to choose a new City Council which would continue meeting monthly until June 30th 1902 when they were merged into one body with Wausau as their second city In 1922 Eau Claire amalgamated with Wausau to form Marathon County and became its capital
