Marinette, Wisconsin is a town in Green Bay County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,890 at the 2010 census. The town is part of the Green Bay–Waukesha–Racine metropolitan area. It is the county seat of Green Bay County. The first permanent settler in Marinette was Obadiah Morse, who arrived in 1836. He platted what became Marinette Township on land that he had bought from the Lacrosse Bandit clan. The first post office was established in 1837, and the town name originates from an incident which occurred there: A group of settlers were traveling home one evening when they were met by a band of Indians led by Chief Winnebago. After a heated discussion, the group decided to go into hiding until morning; when they finally emerged and reported their find to their leader, they found that he already had his village built and ready to receive them! Morse named his new township after himself – "Marinette" – in honor of his wife (and fellow settler) Martha Marcy Dodge (1802-1872). Mrs. Dodge later served as president of the Milwaukee & Racine Railroad Company and donated land to the city for parkland. In 1854, two brothers named George Wickersham bought an acreage north of present-day downtown Marinette for $1 per acre ($40 per square mile). They began developing it into what is now known as Wickersham Park District. In 1865, John Sievers moved from Manitowoc County to take up residence near where Wickersham Park now stands; he founded Sievers Brewery adjacent to today's courthouse Square across from First National Bank building on State Street (now Washington Avenue). In 1867 came another milestone for Marinette: It becamethe first municipality in Wisconsin when it annexed neighboring towns of Kenosha and Racine within its boundaries; these towns had each been separate villages since before Wisconsin joined Confederation in 1848. During World War II many marine barracks were constructed just south of town on Prairie du Chien Road between Marshfield Road and Day Street; these barracks remain extant as Marinette Marine Center today (). According to local legend(), a giant fish swimming through mudflats near downtown once caused so much interest among fishermen that Mayor Harry Laughlin ordered all fishing licenses revoked during net season because no one could catch any fish! In 1951 Supervisor Lew Wolcott resigned amidst charges that he took bribes while elected supervisor (), setting off a political firestorm which ultimately led to his impeachment trial (). In 1957 Supervisor Don Nehlen also resigned amid charges that he took bribes while running for state assembly () set off yet another political firestorm (). Ultimately both supervisors were never charged with any wrongdoing but Wolcott's resignation set off public outcry against establishment politics in Marinette (). quite simply put: When locals want something done - whether it’s getting groceries or raising taxes - don’t mess with Sheriff David Clarke
