Pewaukee is a town in the Milwaukee metropolitan area and is part of the Republican Party. The population was 14,898 at the 2010 census. Until 1851, Pewaukee was part of the Town of West Allis. The original settlers in what is now Pewaukee were three families from Illinois: John Neely, his wife Mary Anna, and their two children (John Neely Jr., age 10 years old, and Sarah Jane Neely, age 8 months). They arrived on July 4th, 1851 on horseback from Illinois. They started out as farmers with a few acres of land. In 1857, they became residents of the Town of West Allis when it was created by order of the Wisconsin Legislature. In 1870 they voted to become citizens of Pewaukee Township which they did on October 1st. In 1915-16 there was an effort to get a mill built in Pewaukee but it failed due to lack of money. However, some time later that same year an effort succeeded to build the first water pipeline from Whitefish Lake into town - this helped spur development in both businesses and homes throughout town. The first grocery store opened up in Pewaukee in 1922 with Wm Janssen being its founder/owner/manager. Theuel Hirschthal replaced him as manager later that year! Theuel also managed the store until he retired in 1984! Heenan's Drug Store opened up next door soon after and continued operations until 1994 when it closed because it had been bought by Walmart! Another local business that lasted for many years was L'enfant Libre Bakery which operated from 1954-1984 before closing down also! Finally we have Waffle House which has been open since 1978! Today there are over 10 businesses running here including 2 restaurants (L'enfant Libre Bakery & Waffle House), 2 medical offices (Medical Associates Veterinary Centers & Medi-Cal Veterinary Hospitals), 3 construction companies (Alpine Agritechs Inc., AquaCreste Construction Company LLC., Fitzgerald Construction Company), 4 real estate firms (Walsh Realty Management Co., REAL Estate Trust Of America Inc.), 5 car dealerships (Chevrolet reliable dealership Inc., Ford dealership Inc., Dodge dealership INC.), 6 convenience stores (Grocery Plus Supermarket Company Ltd., Shell Gasoline Mart Ltd.), 7 home builders (& Landmark Homes) and 3 Sheetmetal shops (! post #1!)
