Evanston is a city in the U.S. state of Wyoming and the seat of Laramie County. It was founded in 1868 by saddlemakers, farmers, and businessmen as an agricultural center on the Laramie River. The city has grown to become one of the most important economic nodes in eastern Wyoming, with a population of over 100,000 people and a downtown area that is home to both governmental offices and cultural attractions. Evanston, Wyoming is a town in Sheridan County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 592 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Great Plains Metropolitan Statistical Area. Evanston is located on the Laramie–North Platte River valley and is bordered to the east by Sheridan County and to the west by Paxson County. The first Europeans to visit Evanston were fur traders in 1805. In 1827, Evanston was platted as a village by settlers from Illinois, who named it after George Washington Evans (1784-1845). The name may be derived from "evan" meaning "to go away" or "plain," and "stewart"meaning "store." In 1863, Evanston became an incorporated town when it merged with neighbouring Paxson County. The merger created a single municipality with a population of 3,811 in 1990. The current mayor of Evanston is Dan Gardner. The town has been home to some pioneers in its history such as General James Bemis (1810-1896) who fought during the American Civil War and rancher John Doolittle (1902-1985) who founded Doolittle Field Airport near present day downtown Evanston. Other notable residents include architect Ira Noyes (1920-2004), author Ken Follett (1925-2003), businesswoman Jay Lynch and basketball player Julius Erving (1937-2007). 4% of all national sales are made through online retailers such as Amazon Web Services and Apple Inc., both located in downtown Evanston

By 1907 there were over 60 businesses with a population of 5,000 people. In 1916 Evanston became an incorporated town with a population of 20,000 people and soon hosted major events such as the Fourth of July Celebration which attracted 100,000 people to the park across from town
