Rock Springs is a town in Laramie County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 1,639 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Great Plains region. The town was founded in 1872 by Mormon missionaries as a Cache Valley outpost on theoji River. The first ammunition store in Rock Springs opened its doors in 1887. By 1912, it had become one of the most important and well-known ammunition stores in the area. In 1942, Rock Springs became an official site for manufacturing U.S. military munitions during World War II and continued to do so until 1984 when production ended due to air pollution concerns. Ammunition sales stopped entirely at that point but some products continue to be made here today including rifle rounds and shotgun shells
