Rock Springs is a small town in Sheridan County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1867 by Jedediah Smith and his party of pioneers. Multi-tool history in Rock Springs began with the arrival of George Armstrong Custer in this community on July 24, 1875. He brought with him a Kit Carson pack horse and four bags of tools including a knife, axe, tomahawk and revolver. The first store in Rock Springs was built by A.F. Root and Wm. Jowett on the corner of Main Street and Cedar Creek Road. In 1886, John Wesley Powell arrived here as part of his Overland Expedition to map out the Lewis and Clark trail system. On November 12th 1865 while exploring what is now Park City during the Overland expedition led by Ulysses S Grant), he discovered coal seams near where Rock Springs stands today. This discovery helped initiate oil production in nearby Laramie County which started right after World War II ended; however, it took until 1984 for oil production to reach its current level hereabouts!

The first inhabitants of what is now Rock Springs were the Arapaho people. They lived on the banks of the Snake River until 1858 when they were forced out by white settlers. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant called for all Native Americans living east of Fort Laramie to come together and fight against US troops during the Indian Wars. Many of these Indians gathered at Rock Springs and fought as part of the Battle of Little Bighorn in July 1876. In 1881, Rock Springs became an incorporated town with a post office and two stores. It had a population of 256 people in 1920 and 514 people in 1940. By 1960, the population had decreased to 422 people due to natural attrition and migration from other towns in Sheridan County.. In 2000, Rock Springs merged with nearby Sheridan Village to form one municipality with a total population of 1,847 residents (including 1,143 citizens residing within Rock Springs). Rock Springs has been known for its natural resources since it was founded by fur trappers in 1799-1800 including coal, silver ore, gold nuggets, lead or zinc ores and timber. As production increased through mining and ranching operations over time more land was needed so rock wells could be drilled for water supplies which required bringing water up from deep underground which further enlarged the need for agricultural land adjacent to minesites where irrigation could be realized using surface water drawn from streams that crossed nearby hillsides.. In 1903-04 Congress created Yellowstone National Park after approving an executive order from President Theodore Roosevelt authorizing national public works projects along US national borders including construction of roads and railways inside Yellowstone National Park without congressional appropriation or consent.. On November 12th 1907 Rocky Mountains Railway agreed to provide freight service between Denver Colorado & Grand Teton National Park w/ express passage thru park enabled thru Sept 11th 1908 thus ending 100 years long train monopoly by mail carrier Rocky Mountain Mail
