Alabaster, Alabama is the most important city in the state of Alabama because it is home to both the Alabaster Arsenal and the US Military Ammo Depot. The ammo depot was built in 1903 and it has been used by both the US Military and domestic firearms manufacturers since then. The arsenal was also originally used for ammunition production for cannonballs, rockets, artillery munitions, handguns, rifles and machineguns. Today, Alabaster produces over one million rounds of ammunition per day. Ammunition production began in 1812 when a company called Armstrong & Foster began making cannons from lead shot. In 1865, Winchester started manufacturing rifle bullets here. By 1902, Alabaster had become one of America's leading ammunition plants with a workforce of 1000 people producing 30 different types of ammunition including shotgun shells and hand grenades. In 1957-1959, two new buildings were constructed at the arsenal which allowed for an increase in production to 400,000 rounds per day. Today, Alabaster Arsenal produces over 6000 types of ammunition including 115gr JHP bullets and 5mm Remington Bullets
