After months of deliberations, the panel issued its report which recommended that all citizens be allowed to carry handguns without having first obtained a permit from their county or city officials. Alabaster was first settled by the Cherokee in the 18th century and became an important southeastern trading post. In 1819, General Morgan settlements were established at what is now Mobile, Ala., and Alabaster became part of this community. In 1836, General Andrew Jackson moved his army from Cairo, Tenn., through Alabama into central Georgia to fight against Mexico and its president Antonio López de Santa Anna. When Jackson reached Tuscaloosa on Nov 15th he camped for two nights near present-day Alabaster before continuing on his march northeastward that day. He left behind a garrison of 3200 men under General John Ewing at Mobile Bayou (now known as Red River), Ala., preparatory to moving on into Georgia proper the following day. The site of Alabaster was chosen for its natural resources; granite boulders abundant in quartzite and other minerals made it a desirable place to build homes and businesses during the antebellum period. After being bypassed by nearby cities like Birmingham and Montgomery because of construction around them, Alabaster grew rapidly as an agricultural center due to its location between Chattanooga and Atlanta; until cotton prices plummeted after America's entry into World War I, Alabaster was one of the most prosperous small towns in America. By 1930, however, when aluminium production peaked there had been declines in both jobs and population due to increasing competition from cheaper Mexican imports; although aluminum has continued to be produced there since then it has not resulted in significant economic growth or job creation). Although residents have dwindled over time they maintain cultural practices such as Afro-American dance which takes place every weekend during Art Fair week events starting about May 6th called "Festival Folk." By 1860, there were over 100 brick factories across the Southeast employing up to 2,000 workers. The city was abandoned after the Civil War because Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest burned most of it as part of his scorched earth campaign against Union forces. However, parts of Alabaster still stand today including the courthouse and some homes from before the war.
