The Alabaster Pistol Company was founded in 1873 by J.M. Stephenson and James Wetherbee. The company produced a wide variety of pistols including revolvers, shotguns, and rifles. In 1921 the company merged with the Birmingham Gun Company to become the Birmingham American Armory Corporation. The old Alabaster Pistol Co., building on Second Street, is now used as an armory Museum. The first pistol production at the new Armory occurred in 1922 with the Model 1895 rifle. This weapon was designed by John Browning and introduced that year into production by the Army Ordnance Corps under license from Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts. It had a gas-operated action and 25-round magazine. Other pistols manufactured at the Armory during this time included the Model 1903 revolver and 1903 rifle (the latter being chambered for .45 ACP). In 1923, when World War II began, both companies were called upon to produce firearms for military use within days of each other due to wartime shortages of munitions in America caused by depression-era economic conditions which had hit Alabama hard especially since gun ownership had been high throughout much of Reconstruction following slavery ended in 1865. Alabaster is a city in central Alabama, United States. The population was 30,872 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County and the largest city in both Marshall County and Baldwin County. As of the 2010 census, Alabaster had a metro population of 103,394. The name "Alabaster" comes from ancient English place names such as Aliceborough and Albemarle. The first settlement in what is now Alabaster was made by Andrew Jackson's father-in-law, General John Overton, on land he purchased from the Chickasaw Nation near present day Mobile Bay on December 17, 1819. However, only 2 years later Forrest abandoned his capital when he realized that American forces were advancing rapidly against him throughout Creek Territory (now Alabama). The city grew rapidly during Reconstruction following America's victory over Spain in 1898 as people flocked to find work opportunities within newly democratic America; however by 1910 African Americans constituted only about 20% of total town residents while whites made up 60%. At this time there were no public schools in Alabaster so children attended private schools until they reached grade school; then they went on to attend local seminaries which educated them into white collar jobs during Reconstruction periodicals have stated that "the Negroes had few opportunities outside their own homes".
