In general, however, it can be said that the design and manufacture of AR15 Upper Receiver Units (URUs) began in earnest around 1986-1987 when a team of engineers working for Colt Ammunition decided to develop a new firearms platform using an existing rifle barrel. This new platform would use a short stroke gas system that allowed for more consistent fireability with older rifles, as well as greater accuracy and efficiency. The first prototype URUs were created from 1987-1989; these units were known as the Colt Python Model Uru. These early models featured a 14” barrel with an A4 feed ramps and did not include any optics or other features common on later models. While these prototypes were initially met with some success, it was not until 1990 that further iterations of the Python were made which would become known as the Colt M1A1 Carbine Upper Receiver Unit (Uru). The M1A1 Carbine Uru was designed to mount most any type of firearm including AKs, shotguns, pistols and rifles. It also offered significant advantages over its predecessor such as better feeding reliability and handling due to its revised geometry which made use of cheek welded receivers instead of traditional lugged receivers. Additionally, the M1A1 Carbine Uru included several innovative features which helped make it one of the most successful firearms platforms ever manufactured by Colt Ammunition. For example, it featured an ambidextrous safety lever which allowed users to operate both weapons simultaneously without having to take their hands off of the gun like earlier designs did; additionally, it included a forward assist function which helped reduce hand fatigue while firing at high levels of velocity. The final version of the M1A1 Carbine Uru was released in 1993 and became known as the Colt 9mm USP Upper Receiver Unit (URU). While there have been many revisions to both Mk I/Mk II/Mk III URUs and also subsequent rebranding efforts throughout their history, they all share one common denominator – they are allBased on an existing rifle barrel - specifically the 8” long Colt Performance Barrel used in bolt action rifles like Winchester Model 1892s & similar guns dating back to before 1886
