Albertville, Alabama is a city in Autauga County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Autauga County and Albertville is part of the Birmingham–Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first town in this area was Albertville which was founded by Andrew Johnson in 1819. In 1836, John Chapman built a cabin on what is now Grady Street in downtown Albertville that served as the first post office in what is now Autauga County. The first school in this area was established on Second Street near today's courthouse square by 1837. In 1850, Jens Ludwig opened the first general store in what is now downtown Albertville and soon became one of the most important stores in this area. By 1865, there were 11 businesses operating in downtown Albertville with a total payroll of $5,000. In 1870-71, an addition to Grady Street known as "The Gables" was built for Drury Waddell who ran a hospital and mental asylum called Valley View Hospital until it closed its doors in 1979 after serving patients for over fifty years In 1907-08, an addition to Main Street known as "The Palace" was built for James Denny who operated a grocery store and dance hall from his business until his death four years later On November 12th 1920 two cannons were fired from Fort Elliott during World War I as part of ceremonies leading up to surrendering all German forces within Alabam
