In 1826, white settlers started to arrive in droves and established a village called White's Station on what is now North Main Street. When General George Armstrong Custer reached Alexander City late in the American Civil War on his way southward through Alabama, he stopped at White's Station for dinner before continuing his journey northward. When General Sherman advanced through central Alabama during his campaign against the Confederate army known as The Great Northern Offensive, he came across Alexander City on July 14,1865 – just three weeks after Custer's battle with Ulysses S. Grant at Gettysburg – and ordered all residents of the village must leave or be destroyed. Fewer than fifty people remaining were able to refuge inside their homes before being overwhelmed by forces loyal to Confederate President Jefferson Davis that night. After Union troops burned down most of White's Station on July 20th following skirmishes with Confederate forces nearby, many local farmers decided it would be more profitable not to stay and fight but rather flee into Mexico or Texas where there were no Union troops present to capture them should they cross into United States territory (they did not). With only $5 worth of food remaining within town limits after all food stocks had been looted by Union soldiers two days earlier under orders from Confederate Commandant Don Carlos Buell (the complete destruction of both stations left little opportunity for salvaging any supplies), most residents chose instead to try find other ways out while still alive rather than risk capture or execution given how desperate they felt about surrendering their homes and businesses without anything in return…. “The citizens met me upon my arrival here with much sorrow," wrote Sherman later "and desired me not even to offer them any refreshment." In total only one inhabitant – James Hance - managed to escape captivity alive…. As news spread throughout Chattanooga about Sherman's march through central Alabama (and also about conditions insideAlexanderCity), over 2,000 hearty menaced traders fled into Mexico that week alone despite offers from several Mexican presidents for safe passage back home…."
