Alexander City, Alabama is a city in and the county seat of Jefferson County, Alabama. The population was 31,589 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Mobile River within the Talladega Hills area of central Mobile. The town originally developed around Alexander's military arsenal and munitions plant on what are now known as Purdy Street and Walnut Street. The first public school inAlexander City was built in 1892 by Mrs. C.C. Johnson, who also served as superintendent for schools for three years that year. In 1895, an addition to the school building was added to house a library which still stands today across from the old armory on Purdy Street. The present day Alexander City Courthouse was completed in 1907 and serves as both city hall and municipal courtrooms today. In 1925, A&P grocery store opened its doors in downtown Alexander City after two years of construction by local businessmen Jethro Lacy and Ewell Broughton under the name "A&P Grocery." Between 1899-1920 per capita income grew from $2 per day to $10 per day (+$711 total). This incredible economic growth led to increased social activity including several churches being built along with many homes being erected throughouttownduring this time period such as what is now known as "The Brick House" which housed both public primary/charter schools for students living within walking distance of their homes while still providing opportunities for families to earn an income from outside sources some escaping violence or poverty in other parts of America while others seeking escape from racism or discrimination within their communities records show over 350 people lived there at any given time when interviewed most residents working qualifications outside fields they knew
