In 1922, Athens became one of the first cities in the United States to adopt a municipal lighting ordinance that required all new buildings and businesses to install light fixtures with lenses within 10 days of becoming operational. This ordinance was designed to promote commuting and business efficiency by allowing businesses greater access to sunlight and shoppers who could avoid darkness during dark hours. In 1951, Athens became one of the first municipalities in Alabama to establish its own city budget. The city also began offering free astronomical tours for residents and visitors on selected days each year. By 1970, Athens had acquired over 20 different types of telescopes, including 12 large binocular telescopes, six medium-sized binocular telescopes, four small telescope systems (including two single-tube systems), three water cannons capable of firing 100 rounds per minute into an air space up to 50 feet wide/depth), five short-tube systems (two each mounted on poles across from each other near river crossings), eight high power telescope systems (six mounted on poles near state capitols or other important landmarks) and five reflectors (mounted on poles around town). Athens, Alabama is a town in Butler County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,532 at the 2010 census. Athens is located on U.S. Route 11 and Arkansas Road north-northwest of the Birmingham metropolitan area. It is part of the Mobile–Birmingham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded in 1881 by farmers from Athens, Georgia who were attracted to land that had been donated by Judge John Blair Foster and others in what is now Butler County. The first mention of Athens appeared as "Athens" on a map made by J.D. Sweet in 1885 while he was working as an agent for Moses Hinton & Son landowners in Chilton County (now Mobile). At that time there were no settlements within present-day Butler County other than Athens and Chiltonville but it soon became evident that farming would be the mainstay of the community's economy; however, transportation options were limited so a post office was established at Athens on November 15, 1886 under the name "Hintonville". In 1895 Athens acquired its own railway station which helped promote trade and commerce within the community throughout its early years." In 1907 Mayor William Sennett announced plans to build a new courthouse in downtown Athens which would serve as courtrooms for all law enforcement agencies within the county including municipal courts and traffic court proceedings; accordingly, construction began on what is now known as Courthouse Square downtown during 1908-1909 with completion taking place during 1912-13 under state funding courtesy of Governor John Crain . After World War I Athenians played an important role in supporting their military service both through volunteering for various services abroad or donating goods and services; nevertheless following World War II muchofthe local commerce stopped due to dwindling resources although some manufacturing does still take place today such as cotton textiles exports from town limits along US 11 near Gadsden Beachhandle . An optical accessory history can be traced back to the beginning of recorded human knowledge. Ancient Egyptians were probably the first humans to use lenses and mirrors in their artwork and architecture. By 2500 BCE, Sumerians had developed a type of mirror that could be used for artistic effects, which was later adopted by Babylonians and Greeks. In China, artisans in the Spring and Autumn period created some of the earliest known lenses. The Indian mathematician Aryabhata (c. 300 BC) speculated on how light behaves under specific conditions, which led to his discovery of bifocal optics in 350 BC. Arab scientist Ibn al-Haytham (1044-1111) also discovered ciliary motion in a lens, which helped him develop magnifying glasses. In 1247 AD, Byzantine monk Hristianos Zimbelis improved upon Ibn al-Haytham’s theory of astigmatic correction by using two lenses instead of one to correct spherical aberration. With this innovation, manuscripts could be handwritten with greater accuracy than ever before due to better corrected imagesquality. Although early optical devices were crude compared to modern technology, they provided important insights into optics during their time period. For example, Ibn al-Haytham’s theory of astigmatism allowed for corrections to be made to images so that they would appear sharper than they actually are; this gave rise to the mechanic art form known as perspective painting. Additionally, early lenses were able to resolve small details much more accurately than today’s equivalents; this helped scholars learn more about nature and its inhabitants during ancient times.
