Atmore, Alabama is a city in the US state of Alabama. The population was 33,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. Atmore is located on the Mobile River and serves as an important transportation and commercial center for southeastern Alabama. The town began as a trading post on an early trade route between Mobile and Pensacola. In 1814, Captain James Fenton of the brig "Phoenix" built a Ferry Landing here to offer passage across the Mobile River to Pensacola. The landing became known as Fenton's Ferry because Captain Fenton operated it. By 1800, Atmore had developed into a small community with about 100 residents. In 1818, General Andrew Jackson founded Fort Rogers in what is now downtown Atmore; its purpose was to protect Mobile from Spanish attack. In 1820-22, he led campaigns against Seminoles in central Alabama which resulted in much destruction and loss of life; these raids caused many businesses to close their doors in retaliation for Jackson's military action. In 1830, John Sitton developed a mill at Atmore that became one of the largest textile mills in south Alabama and soon employed over 1,000 workers. The cotton gin boom that followed made Atmore one of America’s most prosperous towns during this time frame; however, by 1860 only 60% of all jobs were held by married women while men continued to hold almost all other types of jobs (36%). Many stores closed down due to competition from larger local companies or lack thereof when technology advanced making production more efficientat less cost than ever before possible! As late as 1870 nearly half (45%) all jobs were held by married women while just 10% were held by men! By 1920 nearly 3/4ths (58%) all jobs were held by married women while only 12% were held by men! Today nearly two thirds (66%) are filled by married women with only 16% being filled by men! This demonstrates how technological advancements have impacted society such as working wives entering into more stable positions within families today rather then having sole responsibility for raising children outsidethe home which often leads them into low income households characterized with little educational opportunities or job security
