Atmore is a small town in Alabama, located on the Flint River. The population was 1,452 at the 2010 census. Atmore is part of the Birmingham-Tuscaloosa-Decatur metropolitan area. In 1805, John Lowry purchased land from Nicholas Varens and built a sawmill on the river. In 1876, local businessman W C Hargrave donated land to establish High School which opened its doors in 1877. In 1954, two brothers by the name of Robertson bought 320 acres (12 km2) along the Flint River for $1 million dollars. This land would become known as Robertson Field which housed several recreational amenities such as a golf course and swimming pool until it was sold to Disney Corporation in 1985 for $32 million dollars. Today, portions of that property are still used by Walt Disney World Resort including access roads and a lakeside park called "Dining Land". Today's economy around Atmore is primarily centered around agricultural production with some light industry being based around Isinglass manufacturing or petrochemical residue processing industries that have moved away from Atmore over time due to health concerns related to their operations nearby bodies of water like Mobile Bayou. However there are also some businesses that have thrived here over time such as Dollar General which has been headquartered here since 1971; JCPenney which has been open here since 1899; Tyson Foods - another large employer in town - opened its first plant here back in 1951; Home Depot - founded here more than 50 years ago - continues to be headquartered here with plans for an expansion into mall space near Pelham Parkway Mall later this year; among others!
