Calera, Alabama is a small town located in Montgomery County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville-Decatur Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1872 by John C. Calera and his brother Amos. The first store in Calera was built on the corner of Second Street and Old Perryville Road. In 1892, the first school was built in the town; it served as a public school until 1978 when it became a private school. In 1922, Calera had its own railroad station which connected with the Mobile and Birmingham Railroad. After that rail line went out of business, Amtrak took over passenger service to and from Montgomery County until 1993 when that service ended too. The community has experienced several expansions over time including an increase in housing development due to job growth in nearby Huntsville and Decatur; however, much of this housing remains undeveloped or underdeveloped as of 2018. As of 2018 there are no businesses active within Calera apart from one small grocery store which services a limited area around the intersection of Second Street and Perryville Road
