In Calera, Alabama, the oldest ammunition plant in the United States was built in 1859. The town was founded by a group of investors who believed that firearms could not be too reliable or expensive to be left unguarded at home. Ammunition production began in 1859 and continued until 1898. During this time, Calera became one of the leading producers of ammunition in the country. Calera is a town in Calera County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,822 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Calera County. The first settler was J.P. Snider and his family in 1836. The town was named after the nearby Mount Vernon Hotel which opened in 1838. The Mount Vernon Hotel burned down in 1851 and the hotel company went bankrupt but they reopened as the First National Bank of Mobile in 1850 with a new name: Alabamian Hotel Company. In 1860, an addition to the bank building became known as "the White House" because it had been used by President Andrew Johnson when he served as Governor of Alabama from 1865-1869 and again from 1871-1875. In 1902, George Wetherbee bought land east of town and built what is now called Wetherbee's Cabin Resort on it which offered visitors extended stays for $5 per day during all months except January which were $2 per day due to low water levels on the creek that year according to some reports[1]. When Interstate 5 bypassed downtown Mobile in 1965, Wetherbee's Cabin Resort became too small so he decided to sell it back to its original owner – his grandson George Wetherbee Jr.– who kept it until 2006 when it reverted back into private ownership[2]. Meanwhile, much of downtown Mobile lost its commercial life when I-5 bypassed it during this time; however there are still remnants of Olde Towne Mobile including several stores around Courthouse Square that have been open since before I-5 passed through town[3]. Many people believe that if I-5 hadn't gone through downtownMobile thenOldeTowneMobile would be completely deserted now days since much of the old business district has either been replaced by more recent buildings or redeveloped into restaurants etc., However this appears not to be true as there are still some traces OF olden times here and there such as a few cobblestone streets leading up to Courthouse Square where once there were several buildings clustered together
The first white settlers in Calera were James and Sarah Caldwell who arrived in 1819. They named the town after their daughter, Calera. The town was originally a log cabin community with a population of around 20 people. By 1830, the Caldwells had built a frame courthouse and two schoolhouses. In 1835, the Caldwells donated land to create what is now known as Elm Street Cemetery. In 1836, John Pendleton purchased some of the Caldwell land and founded Pendleton Mills which became one of the largest cotton mills in Alabama. The Pendleton family continued to own and operate pendleton mills until 1971 when it was sold to MDC Group subsidiary Syngenta CropScience Incorporated. In 1849, James Troup bought some of the Caldwell land and founded Troupville which became one of the largest cotton plantations in Alabama. The Troup family continued to own and operate Troupville until 1974 when it was sold to MDC Group subsidiary Pioneer Corporation Incorporated
