It received its current name in 1907 after General John C. Breckinridge's victory at the Battle of Calera Creek. The post office at Calera served from 1892 to 1957; it was then moved to Baldwinville. The community had a one-room schoolhouse from 1903 until 1943, when an additions Costumes made for use as a church were built (original clapboard structure still stands). A Baptist church replaced the schoolhouse in 1944; it is now used as a community center. There are also three restaurants and several stores in the town today. Cedar Grove remained a separate village until 1915 when it merged with Calera to form what is now known as White Sands. The population of Cedar Grove was 2,004 when it joined forces with Calera; White Sands had a population of 1,913 at its peak in 1930. In 1922, both villages formed what is now called Bear Mountain which included parts of White Sands and Cedar Grove. The Vulcan-Armament Company constructed four rifle ranges within Bears Mountain between 1923 and 1925; these ranges remain operational today (the last being closed in 2003).
