However, something very special happened here during its early years: it was home to the University of Alabama School of Veterinary Medicine (later renamed UA Medical School). This institution helped shape modern veterinary medicine and made Calera one of the leading medical communities in America. Today, UAMS remains an important factor in many aspects of local life including education and economy - both for students and locals alike.

The area that would become Calera was first settled by the Creeks in 1809. In 1818, the area became part of Mobile and was named for James Kenedy Calera, a Revolutionary War general and member of the First Territorial Legislature from Mobile. The town was founded in 1836 by Andrew J. Smith as a post office on an island in Mobile Bay. In 1886, parts of what would become Calera were annexed to Montgomery as part of that city's efforts to gain municipal independence from Birmingham. As of the 2010 census, there were 2,521 people residing in Calera with a total land area of . Of this land area, 99% is forested and 1% is used for agricultural purposes. As of the census date though no data exists on how many jobs are provided within or outside of town limits; it seems safe to say that most residents work within or near their homes which may account for some low unemployment rates around hereabouts
