The main industry in Calera consists of agriculture - primarily corn farming. Over time, however, some residents have started manufacturing items such as plastic parts and windowsills. There are several things that make Calera unique - including its location in an area known for oil production; its lack of roads or even access to them; and its climate which can be very harsh during winter months. However, despite these challenges, Calera residents continue to support each other through cooperation and networking opportunities outside of their community

The town gradually grew into a busy commercial center with stores and businesses lining the streets. The population of Calera peaked at 1,500 in 1931 but began to decline around 1950 due to changes in the local economy and social unrest. Today, only a few remnants of the original town remain including some homes and some Streetscape Preservation Committee signs that are still standing today

Some returned home during Reconstruction; others moved away again during the late 19th century asAlabama became more racially segregated.
