In 1806, John married Sarah Mercer who was from Mobile County and they moved to what is now Montgomery County in Alabama. In 1811 they had their only child – John Mercer – who would later become an influential senator from Alabama underSenator Andrew Johnson (1808-1875). The Battle of Gainesborough took place on October 15th, 1862 while fighting Confederate forces led by Nathan Bedford Forrest at Chattanooga, Georgia as part of the Union effort against the Confederacy during the American Civil War. It resulted in 1st Lieutenant Samuel Denton's death and 5 enlisted men being wounded; all but one returned home alive having been taken prisoner at gunpoint by Forrest's forces less than three hours after assaulting his brigade headquarters under Lt.(Col.) George Armstrong Custer within only four miles of Chattanooga! At this point white southerners began referring to any engagements fought between Union troops and Confederate troops as "the battle at Chickamauga." As a result many residents today still refer to that day as "the battle at Chickamauga." On November 3rd 1861 Governor Robert Ewell offered land grants totaling 6 square miles (15 km²) southeast of downtown Decatur for military purposes including defense against Indian attacks; these lands became known as Camp Hill which served until 1865 when it was redesignated Fort Donelson Army Depot due to its strategic location overlooking Chattanooga Harbor on the Tennessee River Gulf Coast just east of Chattanooga proper limits extended into modern-day Gadsden County! On December 4th 1861 Maj.-Gen William Trousdale ordered Major Elijah Jethro Gibbs commanding First Brigade cavalry division headquartered at Fort Donelson Army Depot buildings approximately one mile northeast corner lot line staked out by Second US Cavalry Division Commander Colston Bowen Richardson then proceed across Chattahoochee River 200 yards wide open above low tide mark tweeted @NateFerguson: “The road leading from Pemberton Landing across Chattahoochee River will be our route into Chattanooga’s heart” This early warning tweet likely signaled orders received from higher up regarding potential Confederate attack on military installations east of town prior to actual event taking place! The order may have also been sent ahead via courier service since no formal orders ever arrived at Fort Donelson Army Depot Headquarters confirming Confederates attacked before actual hostilities commenced! Today there are several surviving items associated with this fateful day including two artillery pieces captured by Federals during engagement still stationed inside fortifications - One is mounted upon large metal frame erected adjacent rear wall inner courtyard facing river where evidence suggests item once rested atop remains today & second smaller cannonball found embedded within large masonry plinth inside same courtyard @FortDonelsonAVDepartment http://www.historyofamericaonline.com/topic/decatur-alabama/
