Dothan is a city in Alabama, United States. The population was 497 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cullman County and is located on the Mobile River, about 30 miles (48 km) east of Montgomery. The first permanent settler in what would become Dothan was James Robertson, who purchased land from the Chickasaw Nation in 1824. From this location, Robertson founded a small community called "Hickory Point" on Hickory Creek near present-day Dothan. In 1830, he sold his holdings to John Fenton and Adam Clayton Powell Jr., who formed the Jackson Purchase Company to purchase more land for settlement in central Alabama. In 1835, William Waddell founded a station on Choctawhatchee River known as "Waldo's Ferry". This became one of the earliest crossroads in central Alabama and served as an important transportation artery for goods between Mobile and Huntsville. By 1840, Waldo's Ferry had become an important commercial center with a storehouse and several homes used by traders and settlers. In 1845, Andrew Johnson established Fort Payne on nearby Canebrake Hill as part of his effort to secureAlabama from Mexico during the Mexican–American War. The fort served as a supply depot while Johnson developed military plans against Mexico City. In 1850, Confederate General Robert Ewell arrived at Fort Payne with orders to attack Johnson if he failed to surrender within 24 hours; Ewell instead withdrew after learning thatJohnson had no intention of capitulating peacefully. During Reconstruction following the American Civil War, Dothan became one of many black towns leveled by white mobs during reconstruction efforts across Alabama following the war. Many African Americans were forced into poverty or worked off farms while they waited for opportunities to arise anew under Reconstruction laws enacted by Congress rather than through state courts controlled by white supremacists like Governor George Wallace). After investing heavily in education and infrastructure projects during Reconstruction,[9] white Republicans moved into power during World War II and began developing Dothan into an industrial town focused primarily on munitions production.[10] However, post-war suburban development transformed much of downtown Dothan into working class neighborhoods which continue to struggle today with limited access to quality public services

Dothan, Alabama is a city in the U.S. state of Alabama and the seat of Marshall County. As of the 2010 census, its population was 21,362. It is located on the Gulf Coast about 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Mobile and 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Birmingham. The town was founded by settlers from Tennessee in 1819 as Dothanville after they were driven out of their home in nearby Huntsville by Native Americans. The first post office at Dothan was established in 1826, and the first store opened in 1829. In 1830, John Gadsden founded what would become Gadsden County and named it for himself; it became part of Marshall County in 1836. The first school in Dothan was built on South Second Street near present-day Montgomery Street in 1831–32; it operated until 1840 when it was replaced by a larger building on First Avenue which still stands today. In 1840, General Andrew Jackson visited Dothan and attended an agricultural fair there that attracted many people toMarshall County for new land to purchase or build homes on; this led to Jackson's nickname "The President" because he could hold meetings without traveling all the way to Birmingham or Mobile Bayou which then formed his political stronghold. During Reconstruction era (1868-1877), several stores and other businesses were established throughout rural Marshall County including one at present day Horseshoe Bend Casino which served as a propaganda tool against white supremacy during this time period; two churches also opened during this time with services being conducted from horseback due to lack of infrastructure available for cars or buildings at that timeEast Side Baptist Church operating from a shack on North Cherry Street while Methodist Episcopal Zion Congregationalist Church opened on East Broad Street across from Pickens High School later becoming known as Renaissance Place Historic District).
