The National Memorial Cemetery & Museum has since been established adjacent to Warrior Field on Main Street east of downtown and contains more than 7,000 graves from that war including those of 1st Sergeant Leroy Sullivant and Private First Class Clarence King who were killed together while serving with Company G1/2, 26th Infantry Regiment duringOperation Market Garden on October 20–25 1944 The post office which served Enterprise until 1954 was renamed Enterprise Post Office after the merger. In 1802, the first land grant in Enterprise was given to Major James Fenton. In 1814, a post office was established in Enterprise and operated until it closed in 1839. The town started to grow rapidly after this time and by 1830 there were over 100 residents. The first school opened in 1830 and instruction continued until it closed in 1835. A church was built in 1840 and services began that year. In 1843, Enterprise became a county seat of Marshall County and remained so for the next decade. However, due to population growth and financial issues, the county seat moved back to Birmingham in 1850. In 1865, Enterprise became an Alabama state capital when Montgomery was founded as the state's new capital.
