Enterprise, Alabama is a city in the U.S. state of Alabama and the county seat of Butler County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 113,827. The city is located on Interstate 55 and Interstate 965 between Birmingham and Mobile, both states' east coast capitals. The first settlers in Enterprise were transient slaves who arrived during the American Revolution from nearby Mobile Bay area. After several years of settlements by free blacks and Native Americans, white entrepreneurs bought land around what is now Enterprise in 1796 for $2 per acre (1/6th of a mile square). White pioneers built log homes with outhouses on their properties until 1837 when an act requiring all new businesses to have a fire engine started an era of town planning which aimed at providing public services such as water supply and sewerage. In 1855 Enterprise became part of Montgomery County when it was created from parts of Butler, Jefferson, Perry and Hale Counties. The cotton gin boom helped turn Enterprise into one of America's leading cotton-producing cities during the 19th century; however this prosperity did not last long due to competition from other cotton-producing counties such as Mobile and Pensacola Beach in Florida; also during this period somepuritanical values began to spread through many American cities which led to increased crime rates among poor black citizens living near white populations before World War II had any impact on these problems However since then there has been increasing hope for development within downtown business districts while preserving much historic architecture including old courthouse buildings dating back to 1800s In 1969 Enterprise was designated "Civic Center City" by Mayor Cagle after being selected as one among five finalists following a competitive process overseen by Governmental Affairs Director Judge Burton Cagle Jr.; at that time it marked the first time ever that an urban center had been honored with this title outside¶the capital region served by Statesboro Municipal Airport which serves as our airport today After more than 40 years as its civic center – home for community meetings, dances, conventions and more – Downtown will soon be re-opened to the public after undergoing a $5 million renovation project spearheaded by Sector 7 Incorporated (a private developer) focused on restoring areas along I-565 corridors adjacent to Main Street Brick Kiln Brewery Corridor; programming designed specifically for Downtown Residents & Visitors will continue throughout this project with events every weekdays starting late morning until late evening

In 1819, Enterprise was founded by James McMurtry and his brother David McMurtry. The brothers began the business of importing goods from Scotland. They soon became successful and developed a large connected ranching empire in central Alabama. In 1838, they purchased the Mobile Register as their primary source of news and information. The empire continued to grow with the acquisition of other newspapers throughout the years. In 1861, McMurtry sold his holdings in Mobile Register to John Denton for $2 million. In 1865, Enterprise merged with two other papers, The Huntsville News and The Birmingham News to form the Birmingham Evening News Company Limited.
