The history of Enterprise, Alabama begins with the founding of the town in 1819. The town was named for a General James Fenton who served in the Mexican-American War and was honorably discharged. Fenton purchased land east of Mobile and built a cabin that became the first business in what is now Enterprise. In 1826, Fenton married Martha Berry, who later founded one of the most important businesses in town-the Berryanna Creamery. The creamery produced some of Alabama's earliest milk products and helped shape the state's economy as it grew into a major producer of dairy products. In addition to its production capabilities, the creamery also played an important role in developing local community relations by hosting events such as dances and picnics. After more than 150 years in business, the Berryanna Creamery closed its doors in 2001 but remains an important part of Enterprise history. The next step for Enterprise began when settlers arrived in 1836 after traveling through Georgia and Alabama on their way to find new homes west of Mobile Bay. Three men - John Crain, Isaac Beasley and Solomon Davenport - purchased land east of Mobile from Echols Creek Indian tribe members for $1 per acre. They started building log cabins which became known as "Davenport Cabin" because they were built by David Davenport, one of those original investors. The first post office opened in 1840, serving as an earlyStop along US 98A (now I-565) near present day downtown Enterprise. By 1850, development had begun to grow around Davenport Cabin with construction underway on what is now Midtown Enterprise shopping district and other municipal buildings including a jail and schoolhouse. At this time, enterprise was considered one of Alabama's fastest growing towns with over 100 residents living within walking distanceof each other on Main Street between Depot Street (now MLK Jr.'s Drive)and Russell Avenue (now US-280). During these early days there were few economic opportunities outside agriculture so many people worked within the businesses that developed around them or rented space from others at this time including: JONES & WARREN Lumber Company; THE BEAR BUTTER CO.; PEARL BARNES & COMPANY; SADDLEBACK GRAVEL COMPANY; MOUNTaineer Coal Mining Company; AND WOODLAND HILL CLOTHING CO.; ALL OF WHICH STILL OPERATE TODAY IN ENTERPRISE WITH MODERN EQUIPMENT! The first white people to ever set foot in Enterprise, Alabama were the Reverend James G. Blanchard and his family in 1820. The town was founded by Captain John Folsom, who named it after himself and his daughter, Enterprise. The town quickly grew into a small farming community, with many businesses and homes being built in its early years. In 1827, Enterprise became the capital of Alabama Territory. The following year saw the founding of the University of Alabama by Dr. John Hargrave and Professor William Bradford Payne. After a few years, however, the University closed its doors due to financial problems. In 1836, Enterprise became a state city under the administration of Governor Robert Mays. It boasted an impressive courthouse and several fine buildings such as the Post Office Building which still stands today. In 1865, during Reconstruction times, Enterprise experienced some hard times with numerous riots taking place between black residents and white police officers. However, things eventually calmed down and enterprise enjoyed a period of prosperity until World War II came along and caused many economic setbacks for the city. Today though, there are few if any negative consequences associated with living in Enterprise- all that remains is an interesting historical footnote to keep on mind!
