Enterprise is a city in Mobile County, Alabama, United States. The population was 33,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mobile County. The area that became Enterprise was part ofMobile County until 1836 when it was divided between Baldwin and Mobile Counties. The site where Enterprise now stands was first inhabited by the Akwesasne Nation Indian tribe in 1795. A store and post office were built there in 1835 by John Corder and James Hance, two men who had come from Georgia to found what would become Mobile County. In 1839, Edward Ewing bought the land from the Akwesasne and named it Enterprise after his home state of Virginia. In 1860, sugarcane plantations were established in what is now Enterprise; they produced cotton until 1984. The factories helped build up downtown as a center for commerce and culture during the antebellum period. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, many African Americans moved into enterprise while white businesses closed down or went out of business; this caused race riots in some neighborhoods that followed later years. However, most people who lived and worked in enterprise through most of its history are buried there today on various streets such as McAllister Street and Gay Street east of downtown. Many black businessmen founded businesses here during the early 20th century including Wiley Witherspoon (the founder of Witherspoon's Sons grocery store), Jumbo Robinson (a manufacturer of radios), Charles Barkley (a basketball player) and Willie Horton (the actor known for mugging passengers on trains). According to one estimate more than 90% of all retail sales within blocks around downtown occurred within 10 feet of an enterprise building before 1990s.[1] By 2000 about 50% or all new jobs created throughout downtown were located inside 10 feet of an enterprise building since then - making it one of Mobile's most vibrant districts ever![2]

It is the county seat of Limestone County and home to the Limestone County Courthouse. In 1881, Enterprise was founded as a town by pioneers from Mobile and Montgomery. The first post office in Enterprise was established on December 7, 1881. The town grew rapidly due to its location and the production of cotton necessary for its growth. By 1888, Enterprise had a population of 2,000 residents and within five years it had reached 4,000 residents. In 1906, Enterprise became an incorporated city under the name of Birmingham with a population of 10,000 people. However, Birmingham would not become fully fledged until 1959 when it amalgamated with other cities in Jefferson County to form consolidated Birmingham-Jefferson County government. As part of this consolidation process that took place throughout Alabama during the 1960s and 1970s Enterprise lost much of its importance as both an agricultural center and early industrial center due to suburbanization and general economic growth in surrounding counties while also losing many jobs to more distant metropolitan areas such as Birmingham or Jacksonville. However, today enterprise remains an important community within Limestone County with strong ties to local farmers who continue to operate their businesses there; some are even still operated from outdated buildings dating back to before World War II which have been preserved for historical reasons alone!
