The town was laid out with blocks square and named after some of its founders: Henshaw, Ritchie, Aycock, Cobb (father of lawyer Obadiah Cobb), White (son of an early black settler) and others. From these beginnings until about 1900 Enterprise had only one store - Wm Gillett & Bros., which operated on Montgomery Street between Court Avenue and Second Street. A number of new businesses were started during this time including Davenport Boot & Shoe Store on Court Avenue west of downtown; Drury Clothing Store on Third Street south of downtown; Eagle Tailor Shop at Fourth Street east of downtown; Mrs Knox's bakery on First Street north of Court Avenue; Mrs Watson's dress shop at Eighth Street east off courthouse square; Variety Store at Tenth Street south off courthouse square - these stores all closed within a few years after opening because there was no market for white goods in rural areas like Enterprise then!
