Enterprise, Alabama is a city of over 100,000 people and it is the county seat for Baldwin County. The town was founded in 1837 by John W. Stephenson as a trading post on the Alabama River. It grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location on an important trade route between Mobile and Nashville. In 1881, Enterprise became the first incorporated municipality in Baldwin County. In 1924, Enterprise became one of two cities in the state of Alabama to be established as towns specifically for African Americans. The other city was Birmingham. During the late 20th century, Enterprise experienced rapid growth as a center for education and business opportunities. However, during the 1990s and 2000s enterprise experienced significant economic decline which has led to residents struggling to maintain their homes and businesses. The community has made efforts to revitalize its economy through such programs as arts programming, job training and entrepreneurship initiatives
