During the 2000s local politicians successfully lobbied to have Eufaula declared a disaster area due to continuing declines in median household income and housing prices; however this designation was later rescinded by FEMA because of concerns over its impact on community stability. Today, much of downtown is still empty except for some businesses that remain open due to tax breaks from HUD or state government assistance programs such as low interest rates on loans used for redevelopment projects or infrastructure rehabilitation. In 1817, Wilkinson and his wife, Sally, decided to move from Mobile to found their own town in what is now Eufaula County. At first they called their townhall "Mosesville" after Moses Montgomerie who had built a log cabin thereabouts during the early 1800s. However, as development grew around them, they realized that they needed another name for their new community because Mobile was already well known as a commercial center with many banks and businesses. They settled on "Eufaula" after talking about it with each other at dinner one night while staying at an inn on US 9 near present day downtown Eufaula. After settling down in their new community, John Wilkinson started selling land parcels around town for $5 per acre which quickly became a popular scheme among farmers looking to start up small villages close to marketside where they could sell goods directly to consumers or take advantage of transportation links provided by nearby tracks such as the&e Railroad Extension (now I-565). Over time more land parcels were sold until nearly all that remained within original village boundaries were owned by John Wilkinson himself or his descendants through patents dating back to 1836-1857 inclusive! It wasn't until 1915 when Birmingham's civic government assumed control over local governance within municipal borders which led eventually to the current form of government currently operatein downtown Eufaula! Although formed primarily as agricultural communities focused on raising livestock/cattle orchards provide production income for farmer families supplemented by some manufacturing operations (the first post office opened here on July 1st 1865), these rural hamlets gradually began developing into large industrial centers due largely(though not exclusively)to factors associated with railroads reaching them -XXXXX XXXXXX - providing access both inland via routes like Butterworth & Lupton Road leading south from Montgomery County across Alabama into Tennessee Valley; thence eastward along I-565 toward Tallahassee just south of Interstate 65; northwestward along Old US 127 southeast out past Foley Airport onto Ihlenbeck Street necessary for accessesidesuch as Opelousas Junction (I-21 north) linking Jackson County with Monroe County). Even though dominant farmland continued being used intensively despite increased competition from newly developed areas further west Hogbin Township wit h its cotton plantations offering far superior yields; nonetheless few people resided within traditional hamlet boundaries anymore save occasional farmers visiting friends & kin regularly & picking crops along roadsides whenever possible; continuing patterns established before absorption of railways into larger metropolitan areas."
