Eufaula, Alabama is a small town in the Shoals County seat of Atmore. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville–Decatur, Alabama Metropolitan Statistical Area. Eufaula was founded in 1820 as a trading post on Hiawatha Creek by French traders and fur trappers. In 1824, it became an incorporated town with a courthouse and schoolhouse. The town was named for then-Governor Eufaula Bibb (1798-1862). In 1907, Eufaula became one of the first municipalities in Alabama to establish public transportation with streetcars. The city expanded its services to include bicycle buses in 1912 and electric cars starting in 1916. In 1925, Eufaula opened its own airport which served as the secondary airport for nearby Decatur until 1971 when that city's new airport opened. The current name of the town comes from Captain John Smith's landing there on 17 October 1792 during his exploration of Mobile Bayou region during his search for Northwest Passage through what is now Alaska

Eufaula is a small town in Alabama, United States. The population was 721 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville-Decatur, Alabama Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1856 by settlers from Tennessee and Georgia. A post office called Eufaula was established in 1859, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1903. In 1885, President James K. Polk sent a military expedition to Mobile Bay to investigate reports of an Indian insurrection on the Gulf Coast. As a result of this expedition, the US Congress passed the Indian Appropriations Act of 1886 which authorized appropriations for the purchase of land east of Mobile Bay for white settlement and development. The townsite that would become Eufaula was purchased from Chief Will Rogers by William Jealous and John Ladd for $1,000 cash and 100 slaves on July 8, 1886. The first settler in what would become Eufaula arrived on December 15, 1887 when Isaac Winchester sailed into Mobile Bay with his family from Savannah, Georgia seeking asylum from martial law there following General Andrew Jackson's ouster as president that year. Winchester had been arrested for supporting Reconstruction policies during the American Civil War. He had also lost his job as a clerk at Dandridge Barracks near Chattanooga after being accused of disobeying orders from then Secretary of War Edwin Stanton while he served as Quartermaster general under President Andrew Johnson . Eugene Crain became the first mayor of Eufaula on January 1, 1889 when he was elected over incumbent Hemanus Ransom with 78% of the vote against Ransom's 24%. At that time only 10%of all residents lived within city limits; most residents came directly out to rural areas surrounding town because there were no other opportunities for farming or ranching back then apart from corn plantations ceded by Spain to America following their annexation in 1898 (see Spanish–American War). In 1902 Mayor Crain resigned due to health problems after serving two terms; future Mayor Howard Aiken took over duties until 1912 when he ran unsuccessfully for reelection unopposed
