Eufaula, Alabama (formerly known as Eufaula, Alabama) is a city in the U.S. state of Alabama, with a population of Approximately 160,000 residents as of 2015. It is the county seat for Jefferson County and is located on the Gulf Coast about 8 miles (13 km) south-southeast of Mobile and 30 miles (48 km) east-northeast of Birmingham. The town was founded by settlers in 1872, when they arrived from Georgia. The town was named after General James Eufaula, who fought in the Mexican–American War and later served as Governor of Texas during Reconstruction. In 1893 it became a member of Mobile County and was incorporated as a city on February 27, 1898. The first mayor was J. Denny Dayster; the second mayor was Ambrose Hickey Jr.. In 2002 it merged with neighboring Baldwin County to form Eufaula-Baldwin County which has an estimated population of approximately 275,000 people today according to 2016 estimates from the US Census Bureau

Eufaula is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville–Decatur Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1853 and 1854, Eufaula was the site of two important slave revolts against their owners in nearby Mobile Bayou. Eufaula began as a small village on the east side of Mobile Bayou in what is now downtown Eufaula. A post office was established there in 1852 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. The first store built thereon opened in 1857. The first settler to arrive at Eufaula were Levi Coffin and his family who arrived from Kentucky about 1840s. They built a cabin near present day downtown on land that they purchased from Captain John Slocum for $100 dollars. Captain Slocum had been captured by the Creek Indians during the American Revolution and became one of their slaves. He eventually freed himself and moved to Mobile where he started his own transportation business which transported goods between Mobile and Pensacola, Florida before becoming involved with shipping companies that carried cargo across Alabama Strait to Acapulco, Mexico City and other ports on the Gulf of Mexico including Tampa, Florida Eugene Biddle founded what would become Eufaula Academy (now University) in 1865 after arriving from Tennessee with his father-in-law Amos Nottlesworth Sr.. After graduating from college Biddle formed a partnership with Edwin Pryor to purchase 200 acres (80 hectares) around present day downtown Eufaula for $2,000 cash plus an interest free loan from Waddell & Taylor Bankruptcy Trust Company which still owns most of today's downtown Commercial Street area In 1907 when Birmingham consolidated into one citywide government all municipal services were centralized under Mayor George Hargrave who appointed James Jarratt as town trustee which led to development of Town Hall Complex on what are now Main Street and Second Avenue opposite Music Hall Square . The original blockhouse/fire hall erected by Jarratt still stands across Main Street north of First Avenue south of Third Avenue . It served as both local police station during times when such service was not available outlying areas or if it did not meet regulations set by Mayor Hargrave The old jail also burned down about 1900 but has been replaced by present day City Hall which houses many Municipal departments including Fire Department , Streets Department etc… Also located within walls of City Hall are Jail cells used for various purposes such as pretrial detention for criminal defendants awaiting trial or incarceration pending punishment
Eufaula was founded in 1819 by a group of Baptist missionaries, and it became the most important town in Alabama. The town grew around its cotton plantations, and it became an important center for trade and industry. Eufaula also developed into a major education center, with many famous citizens such as Andrew Jackson and George WashingtonAttended school here. In the 1960s, Eufaula experienced a large influx of refugees from Fidel Castro's Cuba, which led to increased traffic and social unrest. In 1991, Eufaula was renamed after General Motors Co.'s CEO Roger Smith.
