A millinery shop was built on land purchased from Isaac Hinton in 1868 and continued to be operated until 1924 by Mrs. Lizzie Smithson who also ran another business next door; this millinery shop produced lingeries for women until 1954 when it closed down due to economic reasons after many years of production for local residents only (the last production run being during World War II). The dam that created Lake Wales formed near where today's Hwy 231 crosses under US 27 south of town limits in 1911 which caused some flooding which destroyed several homes including that of Anna Jarrell Goodloe (1863-1945), widow of General John Pemberton (1795-1865), an early settler and founder of Mobile who served with distinction during the Seminole Wars and Mexican-American War In 1915, WL Boyd Company started manufacturing car radios out of an old refrigerator used as a workshop; they continued to do so until 2000 when they stopped making radios altogether because they could no longer compete against imported electronics products made abroad using inferior materials and processes The post office building still stands today along with other buildings from before or after various eras such as: a gristmill dating back to about 1840; a blacksmithshop/forge/foundry dating back to about 1830; two barns dating back to about 1800 both remodeled sometime between 1840-60 into dwellings; two frame houses built c 1870’s which are still standing although not lived in currently because much has been replaced over time including brick veneer replacement now done inside); one large frame house built c 1900 which is no longer liveable but does have parts remaining such as siding etc.; an ice cream parlor opened 1936 adjacent to Barnes Hardware Store across from High School where customers would buy their cones while waiting for their ride home courtesyof cars running on oil slicks across Fountain Avenue
