Eufaula is located in the Alabama Hills region of central Alabama, about an hour's drive south of Birmingham. The town was founded in 1836 by General John C. Burnett as a military post on the Blanchard River. In 1852, Burnett and his wife, Anna Holcomb Burnett, moved the post to what is now Eufaula. It is named after Eufaula, Mississippi, which was founded by Dutch immigrants in 1819. until about 1840 most of what we now know as Alabama was part of Tennessee. In that year, General Andrew Jackson moved the U.S. Military Headquarters from Nashville to Mobile and named it Eufaula after his sister-in-law's childhood home in Holland Louisiana (now Terre Haute). Eufaula's post office opened on December 6th, 1840 with one name only: "Mobile". Prior to this time there were several Mobile homes scattered around the area including Oneida (now Huntsville), Chilton and Tuscaloosa. Alabama became a state on November 16th, 1959. At its creation it consisted of all present day Tennessee except for the portion lying east of the Cumberland River including Eufaula and much of what is now Montgomery County including Birmingham and Auburn Hills; today those areas are part of Metro Detroit Area
