Eufaula, Alabama is a small town in the Sequatchie Valley of central Alabama. It is located on the east bank of the Cahaba River and has a population of about 1,500. The town was founded in 1851 by General James Hance and his wife, Eliza. Eufaula was named for John Eufaula, an American hero who fought against Seminole Indians during the War of 1812. In 1831, General Hance donated land to make up what would become Eufaula. The town began to grow rapidly after it was designated as a seat of government by the Alabama state legislature in 1853. By 1860, the population had reached 3,000 people. In 1865, Confederate General Braxton Bragg sacked Eufaula and burned all its buildings before retreating back across the river to Montgomery. However, Eufaula's residents never forgot their fallen heroes and continue to celebrate Flag Day each year on May 6th. Today, Eufaula remains an agricultural community with a large dairy farm that produces milk and cheese products such as cream cheese and cheddar cheese. The town also has several businesses including A&W Root Beer or "the King" restaurant which operates from a former grocery store at 301 W Main Street; Log Cabin Bakery & Grill; Creek Inn Bed & Breakfast; Biltmore Golf Course; and Chilton Tire Company which opened its doors in 1928 adjacent to Municipal Airport
Eufaula was founded in 1819 by Isaac Long and his wife, Catharine. The first post office was established in Eufaula in 1824. In 1861, the town had a population of 105 people and a school. On February 12, 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee and his army crossed the Tennessee River at Chickamauga Dam, ending the American Civil War. After the war ended, Eufaula's population grew to over 200 people. The town was renamed for General George H. Thomas on May 21, 1896. The first store in town opened on November 1 of that year. On December 8 of that year, the town had its first tornado when it hit near the courthouse square; there were no injuries or damage done however some newspapers reported that "hundreds" of trees were downed around the area. In 1907-08 Eufaula experienced its second tornado outbreak which destroyed more than twenty homes and businesses within one night including one death from an explosion caused by a lightning strike inside a grocery store blast). In 1915-16 another outbreak occurred which destroyed thirty homes before dying down by wintertime; this time no deaths were reported as a result of these tornados On October 3rd 1978 two EF4 tornadoes touched down within 500 feet each about five miles east of downtown Eufaula destroying fifteen businesses looking out over Iuka Lake towards Selma Alabama then moving into Mobile County destroying several other places including an grain silo outside Bay Minette Alabama
