Fairfield is a town in Clarke County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Montgomery metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Fairfield were French traders who landed on the Mobile River in 1719. They built a trading post and named it Fort de la Pointe (the Point). A year later, they established anpost called Chouteau on the east bank of the Mobile River opposite present-dayFairfield. In 1727, the British burned down Fort Chouteau and moved their posts upstream to ford the Mobile River near present day Selma. The French again visited Fairfield in 1730 and called it L’Isle aux Pêcheurs (island of fishermen). In 1731, Spanish colonists arrived in what is today Fairfield and named it San Petersburgo (St Petersburg). In 1737, Captain James Wright sailed upriver from Pensacola with 400 men to build Fort Natchitoches on the north bank of Mobile Bayou opposite Selma. He named his fort Naucalpan which means “New Spain” in Spanish. After building Fort Natchitoches for six months, he returned downstream to Pensacola with his meat supply but no passengers or goods because Spanish traders refused to trade with Indians when they had access to better resources inland. In 1739/40 Governor Richard Steele sent a party of 50 soldiers under Colonel John Sevier across picket lines into Indian country between this preserver onMobile Bayou and Pensacola where they discovered fertile land that would become Huntsville about two miles away from them on lands recently taken by Captain Wright from one group of Choctaw war chiefs led by Chief Tecumseh during their annual campaign against English settlers in this region known as Pontotoc Campaign (1736-1738) . In 1851, Fairfield became a county seat of Coffee County.
