Fairfield is a small town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville–Decatur metropolitan area. Fairfield is located on the Cahaba River, about halfway between Huntsville and Decatur. The first people to live in what is now Fairfield were farmers who came overland from Tennessee in 1823 and started a farmstead near present day Eufaula. The name "Fairfield" was given to them by Captain John Smeaton who had surveyed the area for the Alabama Territory in 1826. In 1830, James Smith (the brother of Mr. Fairfield) built a sawmill on an arm of the Cahaba River which still stands today as part of Fairfield Village downstream from State Highway 9A (now US-129). The mill provided water power for mills around Mobile and Baldwin counties until it closed in 1922. In 1837, Jabez Auld bought eight acres (30 hectares) of land east of what is now Fairfield Village from Mr. Smith for $1,000 dollars.. He named his new community after himself – AJAurdsboro or "Alabamah." After several years he sold his holdings to John Fenton for $4 per acre ($160 per hectare). Fenton began building cabins and cleared land for farming purposes which he named Auburn Hills after himself and his wife Annie Oakley where she taught school before becoming an American professional wrestler known as Miss Alice Cooper during her time with IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Antonio Inoki's UWF wrestling promotion during the early 1990s. In 1847 two men by the name of Hartsock purchased 2/3rds interest in AJAurdsboro from Fenton for $2,500 dollars cash (). They renamed it Fairview Heights after themselves with assistance from banker Samuel Hopkins who donated land at their expense along both banks of Cahaba River so that water Presbyterian ministers could deal with Indians living thereabouts without arousing hostilities (). fairview became one of Mobile's most popular neighborhoods (). In 1860 Jesse Roper established a gristmill on Big Creek just northwest of present day Fairview Heights; this mill continued operating until 1916 when it was replaced by a modern plant operated by Jorgen Loeffler & Sons Incorporated_. In 1865 Donaldson built a post office near current day University Drive; this post office remained open until 1907 when it burned down due to firelight vandalism (). A smaller post office called White Sands also servedFairview until 1901 when all mail stopped being delivered here because Alabama state law required only white mail be sent through postal facilities.). Nearby White Sands Cemetery remains one of mobile's earliest commercial enterprises starting as an agricultural storehouse used by settlers to store surplus goods prior to shipment out into Mobile Bayou country () later becoming home to several grocery stores (), dentist offices (), and more recently numerous high-rise apartments () since its renovation in 2014-2015.. . . .

Fairs were held in Fairfield every year from 1827 until 1901. The first fair was held on April 12, 1827. The fair was originally called the Agricultural and Horticultural Exhibition and it lasted for four days. The fair expanded to six days in 1861, and then to eight days in 1871. In 1901, the fair changed its name to the Alabama State Fair and it continued to beheld every year until 1971.
