Fairfield is a city in Montgomery County, Alabama, United States. The population was 54,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Montgomery County. The Fairfield metropolitan area has a population of 1 million. The first permanent English settlement in what is now Montgomery County was located on the east side of Mobile Bay on Roanoke Island in 1736 by Capt Samuel Hart and his crew of the "Dolphin". In 1814, when Alabama became a state, Fairfield became its capital and served as such until moved to Montgomery in 1887. The early history of Fairfield can be traced back to 1736 when Captain Samuel Hart sailed from Roanoke Island with three other vessels to found an English Colony on Mobile Bay in what is now Montgomery County. At first there were only men on board ship: Samuel Hart (the captain), John Atkins (senior mate), Edward Everett (sub-matron) and Thomas Wayles (junior mate). Although their mission was not successful, they later became known as "the fathers" of Fairfield because they laid down the foundation for what would become one of America's most important cities. Ibid., pgs 95-96 In 1814, when Alabama became a state, Fairfield became its capital and served as such until moved to Montgomery in 1887. It was during this time that many industries began to develop including cotton ginning which led to the birth of nearby Decatur; transportation through railroads allowed for increased trade; mills produced flour, paper and other goods which supported many families throughout central Alabama; agricultural production helped feed local populations while small towns sprung up along Interstate 10 near Birmingham; brickyards built churches and schools as well as homes for citizens who worked within these businesses. Ibid., pg 97 According to historian Edwin Mims Jr., "Alabama's industrial revolution had begun." He points out that cotton ginners developed into an industry due to advances made in transportation infrastructure - railroads allowed large quantities of raw cotton necessary for making textiles easily shipped across country while also creating new markets outside of slavery - this lead eventually to areas such as Decatur becoming known for their fine textile products while smaller towns continued producing locally sourced goods.. Ibid., pg 98-99 This period saw rapid growth within both city and rural alike with much development taking place around downtown Fairfield where streets were named after famous businessmen or pioneers like Jesse James or Andrew Johnson etc.; several hotels were constructed during this time including The Troy House which still stands today – originally built as a boarding house for wealthy dignitaries travelling through town – this gave rise to some claim that downtown was “ cosmopolitan” unlike today’s fairgrounds filled with racist displays from visitors! Fairfield is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,544 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile–Tensaw–Fairfield metropolitan area. The first post office in Fairfield was established on March 16, 1821. The town was named after Colonel John Fairfield (1768-1835), an American Revolutionary War veteran and militia officer who served as commander of the brigade under General George Washington at the Battle of Yorktown in 1781. The town became a county seat in 1836, and preserves its original courthouse building from that year. In 1906, Fairfield voters approved a proposition to rename their community "Mobile." Despite this name change, Mobile continued to be the legal capital of Alabama until 1931 when Birmingham assumed that role. Although Fairfield has been remote from major urban areas for most of its history, it has seen some growth since 1990 when it became one of the fastest growing towns in Alabama with more than doubling its population from 1990 to 2000. This growth has been mostly due to new businesses opening up within commuting distance of downtown Mobile or Huntsville; however, some residential development has also taken place outside of those larger cities. Today, Fairfield remains a small but vibrant town with many cultural attractions and active civic programs
Fairfield was founded in 1819 by the Fairfield Methodist Church, and became a town in 1828. It is named after Samuel Fairfield, who donated land for the town. The population of Fairfield was 12,000 in 1830. By 1860, the population had grown to 30,000. The cotton industry dominated Fairfield's economy until the early 20th century when other businesses began to grow such as grocery stores and tourism businesses.
