Fairfield, Alabama is a small town in the Huntsville-Decatur area of Alabama. The population was 1,953 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Decatur-Huntsville metropolitan area. The first people to live in Fairfield were Cherokee Indians. A post office called Fairfield was established in 1814, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1925. In 1838, John Fenton built a log cabin on what is now First Street. He named it "Fenton's Bluff". In 1845, James Witherspoon purchased land from the Cherokees and founded Fairfield Academy which he directed for many years. In 1860, David Sibley bought some land east of town and developed it into what is today downtown Fairfield. He named it "Sibley's Addition". In 1865, Witherspoon donated his home on Courtland Avenue to Fairfield Academy for use as a schoolhouse. The present courthouse building was built between 1923 and 1926 by Jno Landon Brownell with funding from banker Julius Rosenwald and other investors who helped finance the city's rapid growth during that time period. During World War II, Fairfield served as an airfields training base for bomber crews from nearby Birmingham. More than 2,000 men from Fairfield were killed or wounded during World War II; most of them died fighting in Europe or Japan. In 1956,Fairield Common School District No.#1 became independent from Jackson County Schools after three decades of cooperation between the two districts; however enrollment continued to be divided among both schools until 1989 when common enrollment was abolished and all students within Jackson County transferred to Fairield Common School District No.#1 without any opining by either school board member/parents/ teachers/ youngsters themselves about doing so - effectively abolishing any lingering sense that there might have been anything left behind (other than name). Since then there has not been much change to either demographics or operations at either district level although some new buildings have been erected including a High School (2009), Middle School (2007) & Elementary(2006) Buildings along with an additional Technology Building which opened in 2013 adjacent to Century High School across I-565 just south of town limits!... This growing community continues strong economic activity via several businesses that provide essential services such as welding services (owned by local family), car wash service (owned by another business next door), real estate transactions (ownershipchanging hands every few months), pet supplies store (owned by another business next door) as well as several restaurants and bars offering delicious food options year round!

In 1827, the first white men came to Fairfield and began trading with the Native Americans. In 1829, a post office was established in Fairfield and mail was transported by wagon from Mobile. The First Baptist Church was organized in 1830. A school was built in Fairfield in 1834. The first courthouse was built in 1836 and it served as the town's government until 1889. The Union Pacific Railroad arrived in Fairfield in 1865 and it quickly became an important factor in the growth of the town. The town had a population of over 5,000 by 1870. By 1910,Fairfield had grown to about 20,000 people and it remained an important center for commerce until the 1950s.
